Whenever you saw Alan emerging from a class at Sullivan, you knew he was leading the bright lights in our year.

He had a quizzical smile that was infectious. You knew he’d be a mensch.

I went to high school with Alan. I
remember our senior year sharing
a fun lunch with Alan and Bob.
Many of us lost contact when we went off to college and on with our
lives.

The years have flown by. We caught up again when I decided to
plan a 75th celebration at Ravinia
Green.
Weeks before our party,Alan invited me to his home for a holiday dinner. His kids were wonderful. It was great to meet his family.

With Alan’s passing, I listened to his beautiful family speak so lovingly about their father. Alan was so loved by his children.
All of them knew how lucky they were to have Alan as their father.
He was so devoted and loving to them as they were to him.

But it isn’t just his family but all those that knew Alan had the same
feelings that he was the best in so many ways.

Alan loved people and people loved Alan. He will be missed by all.

I’m happy that Alan and I renewed
our friendship.

Jerry and I met Alan in 1977 when he came to our house to do our taxes. Through the years we became friends and shared good times together.
Completing our yearly taxes became “Dinner and Taxes” Alan arrived at our home around 6:00 p.m. for dinner and then taxes. We enjoyed our time together. We shared stories about our children, grandchildren, vacations, and restaurants. Sometimes we even had political discussions!! I never would have thought preparing one’s taxes could be fun!!

Listening to his family speak about their dad and share stores about him, made me laugh and cry. I learned that Alan was a gift to all who knew him He was “one of a kind” We are grateful to have known him and will miss him

For the past 30 years, Alan was a friend, a mentor and family. After college, I had the opportunity to work with Alan and Barb at Quality for many years. One of my fondest memories was going to Atlanta every year for the home health care expo. Rather than flying, Alan always insisted we drive the 12 hours. The only reason he would say, was to stop at every Cracker Barrel restaurant so Barb could browse the gift shops. A simple gesture for the one he loved. I think we stopped at 13 making our 12 hour drive 14 hours. Always thinking of others was one of Alan’s greatest traits. I can’t thank him enough for allowing me to be a part of his life.
My deepest condolences go to all his family and friends. He will be missed deeply by all.

I worked with Alan at Quality Healthcare. Whenever Alan came into the office he always had a smile on his face and in his voice. I haven’t seen Alan in years, but I guarantee, if I saw him on the street he would start a conversation or tell me something funny He was a very caring, sweet man that loved all. Rest in peace Alan.

“Big Al” as he affectionately came to be known in our circle loved a good meal, a good laugh, and his family. In the many years that I had the pleasure of interacting with him I was always impressed with his ability to make others comfortable. I met Alan through a friend of mine and he started doing my taxes. I am a realtor and he and Barbara sold their homes with me and bought a home together and I helped his children buy their properties as well. He was the one who suggested that I start investing to save for the future. He was always fun to be around and one of the nicest persons you would ever want to meet. We also both had an interest in sailing and boating. I raced in the Chicago to Mackinaw race and I learned he was on the boat that started the race. Alan was a very interesting and special person! He will be missed by me and all who knew him…

I met Mr. Leff shortly after my family moved back to the United States from Africa. I was going into junior high school and adjusting back to life in America was very hard for me. That said, Mr. Leff Janice and the entire Leff family took me in and made me feel at home. Often spent more time with Mr. Leff and left family than I did at my own house. I have wonderful memories of sharing meals and outings and just camping out in the left household. Mr. Leff was a wonderful man and I am deeply sorry that he is no longer with us. I will never forget his kindness and cherish my memories of him forever.

I met Alan when I was a little girl, and he came over to do my parents taxes each year. I was always so excited for his annual visit, because whenever he came to visit he was so present and made me feel like the stories I had to share were the most important thing he had on his agenda that evening… His annual visits made such an impact on me, that as a 7 year old, we went on a family trip, and I wanted to gift him a seashell from our vacation. Every year thereafter, for at least a decade, Alan came back with that shell in his briefcase; always showing me that he carried it with him before getting down to any work; and making me feel like I mattered each and every time he came to visit. Grateful to have had those special interactions with him many moons ago.

I met Alan in 1979 his firm Leff & Klein did our accounting for our family and our pizza business . Alan and the rest of group were regular customers.Alan always enjoyed anchovies .When he would come in to pick up an order he would tell me wonderful stories of taking cruises and visiting Italy regularly..RIP Alan you will be missed

Alan and I grew up a few blocks from each other. We were both fortunate in having a special group of friends. Alan and I stood up for each others weddings as well as the weddings of some of our friends. Alan and Bob Calderon became regular attendees at Ricks Golf Day which was held in memory of Rick Lava and benefited the American Diabetes Association. Cheri and I had the pleasure of playing golf with Alan and Joan soon after last years RGD event. Cheri and I have many great memories of our times together. Alan was a very special person that we were lucky to have in our lives.

Alan was a great friend for over 63 years which began as classmates at Sullivan high school (class of June1962, both of us holding up the upper 80% of the class)We worked together for several years parking cars at Weinstein’s funeral home on Devon Ave. Alan inspired me to finish college after being in the military for 4 years in the late 60’s. And I figured if he could get a degree in accounting, than how hard could that be. And so began our careers. I vaguely remember working with him on his first accounting client while he was still at the Northern Trust. Naturally, the client thought our fee was too high.
There were many good times and events over that 60 plus years that we shared, much too many to record here, but I just wanted to say that Alan was the best friend anyone could ask for.
Thanks Al and you will be remembered by all who were fortunate to be your friend.

I had known Alan since the 6th grade at Armstrong school. Although we had lost touch these last years I was very taken by his passing, My fondest memory was at the senior prom where the future CPA divided the dinner check three ways although there were four couples. Since he paid the bill he later asked me why his dinner was so inexpensive, I was never certain if he knew the reason.

I’m a friend of his son Michael. I had the pleasure of meeting Alan, I believe, on two or more separate trips to Illinois. I spent some time with he and Michael, and I could tell they have a shared sense of humor. As I recall, Alan was very friendly and down-to-earth. I very much enjoyed speaking with him. I know he will be missed by his family, and I’m very sorry to hear that he passed.
